This book begins an alternate history set in a major, but overlooked, WW I theater: Austria-Hungary in the Balkans and the East. This makes it fertile ground indeed for alternate history and fantasy development. For example, what if the Austro-Hungarian Navy threatened the Suez Canal or knocked out Malta, forcing the Royal navy to fall back on Gibraltar? What if slightly more competent generals led the Army Groups, knocking out Serbia quickly and making a better show against the Russian bear? Suppose the Austrians appealed for U.S. naval assistance early in the war, to protect the rights of neutral shipping in the Mediterranean (the “Tripoli pirate” gambit)? Suppose some key Carpathian passes were blocked by fanatic troops under command of an old-fashioned and reclusive Wallachian boyar, who figuratively (and literally) bled Russian attacks white?“A Carpathian Campaign” is a well-written tale of the heir to a cadet branch of the Esterhazy family, woven through family and friends, common people, and military service, in the sudden transition from the burdens and duties of peace to war and its horrors. We follow young Istvan Esterhazy on his journey from carefree hussar and heir to senior leadership and command, through glory, wonder, grief, and faith. His story meshes well with the historical dispatches and records, and the effects of war on home life and civilian population. The Powers and the Houses allied or associated with them provide an intriguing touch – although not taking part in the human conflicts, they are aware and involved. The Powers and the Dragons also mesh well with the other long game – family, marriage, and alliance among branches of the Hapsburgs, Esterhazys, and Hunyadis (among other great families). The historic conflict between Hohenzollern (“upstart Prussians”) and the Imperial Crown plays well here.
I appreciate the author taking book space to include faith and religious practice of the families involved. The protagonist and supporting characters act according to their faith and family development. This gives the characters much more depth and realism, especially in context of Central Europe. The Emperor and great nobles spent as much time acting as referees, as they did in ruling the lands. The strains among Protestants, Catholic patriarchies, and Orthodox patriarchies (yes, both plural – include the national Churches and patriarchs) act at odds with other strains from ethnic and national ties. Anyone else who has seen and reflected on the Crown of St. Stephen will understand the religious bedrock upon which it rested.
I look forward to more in this series, and it appears that I’ll have to read more of her other books. It’s good to find an interesting author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent alternate history novel.
In a world where Powers and Dragons rule, the Great War is just a bit different from what you learned in school.
I liked it. I am left with some questions on the nature of the powers and houses that I would like answered. I will certainly keep an eye out for book two.
First in a new series, takes an interesting look at an 'alternative' history of WWI from the inside of a small group of 'powers' that are tied to the lands they control and the people who wield them. Recommended if you like quick good reads!
The authors knowledge of European pre WWI history forms a background to this tale of a young Half-Dragon heir to House and Power. I found it interesting and am looking forward to her take on the politics surrounding the war as filtered through the Dragons and land Powers she has added to our world.
A good, solid beginning to what I hope is a new series. Istvan Esterhazy is a Hungarian noble with a stronger than normal connection to his lands. He is looking forward to leaving the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Army when World War I breaks out. This book tells the tale of the first year or so of the war from his viewpoint, and does an excellent job of worldbuilding for a part of the Great War that usually gets little attention. Really looking forward to the next in the series.
If most of what you know of World War 1 is from the Allies vs. Germany, then this will suddenly illuminate why and how an Archduke's murder set the world on fire - and what a fantastically complex web of alliances it was from the Austria-Hungary side. If you already knew that, then this is a wonderful tale of what it looked like from the ground (and horseback), complete with the eternal soldier's complaint about sore, swollen, and frozen feet.
Alma's worked another world in subtly, with dragons and their halfbreed offspring among the aristocrats, and Powers whose borders do more to define the lands than mere streams and mountains, and captured it all through the eyes of a young cavalry officer who learns that in war, the impossible is all too probable, and that duty and honor carry a far greater burden than privilege.
